SEEDS Mission: SEED builds partnerships with schools, farmers, and the community to promote nutrition, education and sustainability through creating school gardens.

SEEDS Steering Committee Meetings are held on the second Friday of each month at the Estacada Jr. High at 3:00 PM

Why?

Supports school policies & standards:

  • Supports District Wellness and Nutrition Policies
  • Reduce waste and associated costs through composting & other sustainable practices.
  • Multidisciplinary active learning integrating Science, Art, Language Arts, Social Studies, Music, Health & PE
  • Social justice/ Community Service Learning rows for the food bank, low-income, social awareness & responsibility
  • Beautifies school grounds & community
  • Increases opportunities for Parent ∓ Community involvement collaboration with parents and parent groups, Estacada Farmers Market, Estacada Family Resource Center (Food Bank), Estacada Garden Club, senior centers, local farmers, high school Ag program, local businesses
  • Provides Therapeutic learning/activity: behavioral, special needs

What?

Sample Activity:

  • Vegetable of the Month: Using the gardens as a guide, Lead Managing Cook chooses a locally produced fruit/vegetable to highlight and creates a menu item featuring that item. Promotional materials are displayed in classrooms and cafeterias and through outreach to local restaurants, library, grocery stores, sent home to families to reinforce learning, link school with community. Garden activities plant seeds of that vegetable, paint with that vegetable, dissect that vegetable, harvest and eat!

How?

District-wide Steering Committee: Presently meeting monthly. Members include principals, school board members, District cafeteria personnel, and teachers, representatives from each school garden committee, FFA Advisor, parents and community members.

School Committees: Each school developing an internal committee to lead individual school garden efforts. Each elementary school is presently participating.
